LaQuan Smith: A true talent

New York based designer LaQuan Smith is one of a kind. He is only 24 but he already has names like Rihanna, Beyonce, Cassie, Nicki Minaj, Alicia Keys, and Tyra Banks wearing his designs. He is also one of the few designers today with a real edge and talent. Not only talented at a young age, but also brave, LaQuan first conquered cancer and after his internship at Blackbook magazine, he founded his own brand. LaQuan tried applying to the Parson’s New School of Design and the Fashion Institute of Technology, but was unfortunately rejected by the committee who did not understand his style and goals, but frankly this did not stop him from trying over and over again.

This is probably due to the fact that LaQuan has always had a love for fashion and his career started after he received a sewing machine from his grandmother at the age of 13, allowing him to practice and develop his unique patterns. His designs are characterized by ethnic and tribal patterns, combined with an ultramodern touch, and his designs are meant for feminine, modern, liberate, and sensual women.

He presented his first collection at the New York Fashion week in 2012 with his ‘Water Goddess’ Collection. This collection was characterized – and inspired by the oceans, the sand, and marine animals combined with goddess like vibrations.

LaQuan is currently being sponsored by Cesare Paciotti, the infamous Italian shoe designer and he sometimes still feels like he lives in a dream. His Autumn-Winter compilation, the Robotic Dream collection, was a combination of dark and bright colors, with a raw vinyl touch. The collection spoke for itself and is all about robotic iridescence and sharp borders.

The intensity of the colors and the clear-cuts shapes of its innovative outfits, is portrayed and brought to its maximum levels with its new SS13 collection: Beau Jardin, with neon charming fabrics and diverse metallic and stretchy jersey fabric presented on the garden terrace of the The Hudson Hotel in New York.

As mentioned before, LaQuan is a true talent, and is it is therefore worth following his footsteps towards a successful designer career. For more information and image credit visit
